摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance preciseness for setting a gap depth and improve overwrite characteristics for a magnetic head having a magnetic recording track with a width of 1μm or less. SOLUTION: An upper core layer 47 and a lower core layer 27 extend from a rear region Y toward a magnetic pole end region X, and their end surfaces are exposed on a medium facing surface 152. A rear insulating layer 80, made of a Novolak-type resin and having an apex surface 80a formed by a post baking process, is formed in the rear region Y on a gap layer 45 provided between the upper core layer 47 and the lower core layer 27. An upper magnetic pole layer 46 is formed in the magnetic pole end region X by an electroplating method employing the gap layer 45 as an electrode, so that a gap depth Gd is defined by a length measured from the medium facing surface 152 contacting the gap layer 45 to the rear insulating layer 80. A portion of a coil 49 is provided over the rear insulating layer 80.
