A heat pump which uses zeolite as adsorption agent, Fig. 3, in which thermal energy from adsorbing zeolite in a hermetically sealed space 121 is used for heating desorbing zeolite which is arranged in another hermetically sealed space 120, can be provided with energy from a low-temperature heat source by the heat used for heating the desorbing zeolite being transferred by means of heat exchange pipes containing a fluid which, before heating the desorbing zeolite, has its temperature increased to roughly 400F (205C) by means of a gas flame, at 151. The adsorption and desorption phases are interchanged between the zeolites in each cycle by reversing the fluid flow in the pipes. Cooling and heating for a building or for another purpose is brought about by means of a condenser 122 or respectively an evaporator 124 for the working gas (water) which is desorbed and adsorbed in the zeolites. An advancing temperature front is established through the fluid-to- zeolite heat exchanger pipes so as to ensure the utilization of as much as 90% of the thermal energy which is available in the desorption/adsorption phases. <IMAGE>
