PURPOSE:To facilitate safe and long time operation of a fuel battery by detecting a resistance value of matrix layer which is provided between a pair of gas diffusion electrode and controlling thereby the amount of phosphoric acid to be supplied to the matrix layer. CONSTITUTION:A matrix layer 2 which is provided between the gas diffusion electrodes 1a, 1b of a fuel battery and holds the phosphoric acid which is the electrolyte, a resistance value corresponding the amount of such phosphoric acid is detected by a detector 4 and is compared with a setting value with a comparator 5, and the phosphoric acid is supplied, based on the result of such comparison, to the matrix layer 2 from an electrolyte tank 7 through an electromagnetic valve 8. When a resistance value of matrix layer 2 exceeds the specified value, the amount off phosphoric acid to be supplied is controlled to the range of 1/99Vm-2/3Vm for the volume Vm of matrix. Therefore, drop of output of battery can be eliminated and good characteristic can also be attained for the operation of long period of time. |
