PURPOSE:To prevent the formation of any hydrogen bubbles and increase the charging depth of an electrolyte-circulation-type metal halogen layer-built secondary battery by adjusting the liquid pressure in the anodic chamber to be relatively higher than that in the cathodic chamber by means of a circulation mechanism. CONSTITUTION:A cathodic chamber 2 containing a negative electrode 2' and an anodic chamber 3 containing a positive electrode 3' are separated by a diaphragm 4 made of an ion exchange membrane. Electrolyte solutions are fed into the cathodic chamber 2 and the anodic chamber 3 from a catholyte container 5 and an anolyte container 6 through pipes 7, 8, 11 and 12 and pumps 9 and 10, thereby constituting a zinc-bromine layer-built secondary battery. During charging of this battery, the liquid pressure in the anodic chamber 3 is adjusted to be relatively higher than that in the cathodic chamber 2. Consequently, charging depth and energy density can be improved by sending Zn ions contained in the electrolyte solution of the anodic chamber 3 into the cathodic chamber 2 through the diaphragm 4. |
