PURPOSE:To obtain easily the titled compound useful as an intermediate for medicines, etc., by reacting a thiol with beta-chloroalanine in an aqueous solution of pH within a specific range, followed by acidifying the reaction solution to show an acidic pH, and separating produced precipitates. CONSTITUTION:A thiol expressed by the formula R-SH (R represents phenyl, halogen, atom, etc.) and beta-chloroalanine are reacted in an aqueous solution of 10-13pH to form an S-substituted cysteine, followed by acidifying the reaction solution to show an acidic pH with an acid such as hydrochloric acid, etc., and formed precipitates are separated by a method such as centrifugation, etc. to obtain the aimed compound expressed by formula I. EFFECT:The aimed compound can be obtained industrially and advantageously from readily available raw materials.
