The method simplifies and automates the part of telephone communication hitherto essential for subscriber identification. For this purpose, an alphanumeric subscriber identification pattern allocated to the calling subscriber is transferred by remote data transmission to the communication device of the called subscriber and is reproduced in a suitable manner for visual perception. The direct, non-verbal identification of the calling subscriber by the called subscriber is thus achieved and error-prone data exchange is eliminated from the telephone communication. Furthermore, the subscriber identification pattern can be used as a component of a database as an abbreviated-dialling pattern for return calls. Automatic further processing of the subscriber data can be carried out in the commercial office environment for a variety of purposes.
