PURPOSE:To correct characters simply by previously applying stroke number information to a correcting character group including correct characters and a misrecognized character and selecting a character matching with the number of strokes of the correct character from the correcting character group on the basis of the difference of the number of strokes between the correct character and the misrecognized character. CONSTITUTION:If proposed characters ''SOKU'', ''SHA'', ''KO'', ''TO'', and ''RI'' (all Chinese characters) are stored in a proposed character storing memory 5 when a character ''SOKU'' written in paper 14 is recognized, the 1st character ''SOKU'' is displayed on a display part 8 as the recognized result because keyed input A of keyboard device 9 is not applied to a control part 7. To correct the misrecognized result, the difference ''1'' between the number ''8'' of strokes of the objective correct character ''TO'' and that ''7'' of the misrecognized character ''SOKU'' is keyed B. The adder 11 adds the difference ''1'' of the number of strokes to the number ''7'' of strokes of the misrecognized character ''SOKU'' and applies the added value ''8'' to the proposed character storing memory 5 in operating as a new stroke number information. Since the character corresponding to the number ''8'' of strokes is limited only to ''TO'', the correct character can be obtained.
