Device for detecting and extinguishing forest fires, and irrigating monitored areas. The invention relates to an automatic device making it possible to detect and extinguish forest fires by spraying a mass of water, in a homogeneous manner, at the height of the top of the trees. The device also makes it possible to collect rainwater and to irrigate the monitored areas. It consists of two tanks 6 and 1 equipped with a telescopic column 2, of a diffuser 21, of compressed-gas bottles 4, of a pump 3 and of an electronic unit 5. When a fire is detected, the unit 5 triggers the gas bottles 4, the gas propelling the water into the column 2 which expands, and the water is sprayed over a long distance by the diffuser 21. The device according to the invention is particularly intended for protecting individuals from forest fires. <IMAGE>
