PURPOSE:To improve magnetic characteristics, durability, etc. by providing a layer formed by dispersing the magnetic powder which is subjected to a surface treatment by a silane coupling agent and is then graft-polymerized with a vinyl monomer into the resulted product of the curing reaction of polyurethane and a thermoplastic resin having compatibility with polyurethane to a magnetic recording medium. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic coating liquid prepd. by dispersing the magnetic powder consisting of oxide magnetic powder or metallic magnetic powder which is subjected to the surface treatment by the silane coupling agent and is graft- polymerized with a vinyl compd. of styrene, (meth)acrylate, etc. into a soln. of a thermoplastic resin such as vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate/vinly alcohol having compatibility with polyurethane and a polyurethane resin together with necessary additives such as an antistatic agent and polishing material is coated on a non-magnetic base and is dried and cured by heating to from the magnetic layer. The high-density recording medium having the excellent magnetic characteristics and surface smoothness and good durability is thus obtd.
