Air filters for internal combustion engines of motor vehicles and stationary engines and of ventilation and air conditioning plants have a reduced effectivity in accordance with the operating time. For the cleaning of filter elements (1), the counter-current process is known, but this is of low efficiency in the case of filters using depth filtration because of the solid particles spreading in the filter material. This problem is solved in a simple manner by pressure pulses (13) in the counter-current process, which act on filter elements (1) using surface filtration. <IMAGE>
