PURPOSE:To obtain activated carbon having pores of a large diameter, adsorbing well waste matter of high mole weight, and suitable for use in the purification of blood by heat treating a specified granulated starting material for activated carbon and carbonizing and activating it by heating in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:A flaky or powdery prepolymer of a thermosetting resin such as phenol resin and a powdery filler such as starch of <=about 100mum size are added to hard spherical nuclei of 0.01-0.2mm. size such as unactivated granulated carbon of a thermosetting resin while centrifugally fluidizing the nuclei in a rotating rotor, and the resulting granules are coated with a thermosetting resin dissolved in a solvent as a binder and a curing agent at 30-80 deg.C by spraying or other method to obtain a starting material of 0.5-1.0mm. diameter for activated carbon. The starting material is cured by heat treatment at 100-200 deg.C and heated to 200-1,200 deg.C in a nonoxidizing atmosphere of steam, CO2 or the like. By the heating, the powdery filler is incinerated or gasified to pierce pores, and at the same time, the starting material is carbonized and activated. |
