PURPOSE:To obtain stably the titled compound, by oxidizing 1,2,4,5-tetramethylbenzene in the vapor phase in the presence of a catalytic substance consisting of an oxide, e.g. vanadium or titanium, and supported on an inert carrier. CONSTITUTION:1,2,4,5-Tetramethylbenzene is catalytically oxidized in the vapor phase with a gas containin molecular oxygen in the presence of a catalyst consisting of the respective oxides of vanadium, titanium, phosphorus, niobium and antimony supported on an inert carrier at 350-450 deg.C, preferably 360-430 deg.C reaction temperature and 3,000-15,000hr<-1>, preferably 4,000-10,000hr<-1> space velocity to give the aimed compound. The catalytic substance of the above-mentioned catalyst consists essentially of 1-80pts.wt. V2O5 and 99-20pts.wt. TiO2, and 0.01-5pts.wt. Nb2O5, 0.02-10pts.wt. P2O5 and 0.1-30pts.wt. Sb2O3 are contained in 100pts.wt. total of both components.
