PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful for petrochemical industry and make it possible to separate the titled compound efficiently by simple distrillation without requiring a distillation column with a large number of plates, by hydrogenating a heavy aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence of a specific catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A >=9C heavy aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. trimethylbenzene, is hydrogenated in the presence of a crystalline aluminosilicate catalyst containing supported one or more metals selected from Group VIII in the periodic table, e.g. Ni, Pt, Pd, Rh or Ir, at 0.1-20hr<-1> weight space velocity under ordinary pressure -12kg/cm<2>G and 250-550 deg.C for supported Ni, and 420-550 deg.C for supported Pt, Pd, Rh or Ir to give the aimed benzene and methyl-substituted benzene, e.g. toluene or xylene. The amount of the supported metals to be used is 0.1- 5.0wt%, based on the crystalline aluminosilicate, Ni and 0.001-1.0wt%, based on the crystalline alminosilicate, Pt, Pd, Rh or Ir, etc. |
