The invention relates to a flight-control apparatus which is used to minimise the fuel consumption in hovering (loitering) flight. In this case, the control apparatus switches the engine to maximum thrust on reaching a lower altitude switching value and adjusts the control surfaces with reference to measurement transmitters such that the aircraft experiences an optimum increase in potential and kinetic energy, and on reaching an upper altitude switching value, switches the engine to minimum thrust and switches on the control surfaces with reference to the measurement transmitters such that the aircraft sinks at its optimum sink rate.
