PURPOSE:To discriminate easily and effectively the tape misloading, etc. and to stabilize the quality of a magnetic recording medium, by using a combination head put into a production line to inspect the recording medium while it is driven. CONSTITUTION:A take-up reel 2 is revolved clockwise to take up a leader tape by a fixed amount, and the tape 4 is stopped automatically when a splice tape 6 is positioned approximately at the center of a cassette half. Meanwhile the video signals are reproduced by a reproduction head part 12b immediately after they are recorded by a record head part 12a of a combination head 12. Thus the tape loading state is discriminated automatically, and the next process is stopped automatically in case the tape misloading is detected. Therefore, an in-line for check is possible within an assembling process, and the quality of a magnetic recording medium is stabilized through an automatic discriminating process. Then the accurate inspection is secured together with the space reduction since both record and reproduction parts are unified.
