<p>A bridge carrying and launching trailer (10) includes a tilt frame (32) mounted to a trailer frame (1b). The tilt frame (32) includes a foot portion (34F) which rests upon the ground when launching a bridge (12). the trailer (10) relies upon the weight of another vehicle (14) to counter the moment caused by launching an unfolding type military bridge (12). One or more control cables (24L) extend from the trailer (10) to the other vehicle (14), preferably an armored vehicle such as a tank, to allow remote control of the bridge launching sequence. The trailer includes a redundant hydraulic system and mechanical components (28R, 28L) such that a bridge (12) may be launched even if one of the two hydraulic systems is damaged. The bridge launching trailer (10) is especially adapted to fit in compact places such as an airplane cargo bay (90). A tongue (40), which serves as an interfacing member between the trailer (10) and a bridge (12) mounted on the trailer (10), is adapted to nest within the trailer (10), thus allowing a bridge (12) to have its width reduced while resting upon the trailer (10) and facilitating the loading of the trailer (10) into the airplane cargo bay (90) with the bridge (12) resting on the trailer (10). A unique method of loading the bridge (12) into a compact space utilizes the ability of the tongue (40) to nest within the trailer frame (16).</p> |
