<p>NEW MATERIAL:Methyl 2-(2-hydroperoxy-2-propyl)naphthalene-6-carboxylate of the formula. USE:Useful as an intermediate for 2-hydroxynaphthalene-6-carboxylic acid which is useful as a high polymer material for fibers and other shaped articles, having excellent high elasticity, high tensile strength, high heat resistance, etc., and obtainable in high reaction selectivity and yield. PREPARATION:Methyl 2-isopropyl naphthalene-6-carboxylate and molecular oxygen are reacted in an alkaline aqueous solution in the presence of a catalyst consisting of an organic acid salt of Co or Mn under heating at 70-120 deg.C to obtain the compound of the formula. A reaction mixture containing the compound of the formula is cooled to precipitate powdery crystals, followed by separation and washing of the crystals with an aliphatic hydrocarbon based solvent to obtain the compound of the formula in high purity.</p> |
