The ion-exchange materials used for water softening are treated with a sodium chloride soln. circulated through the material, the soln. being prepd. by percolating water through a mass of sodium chloride in which has been incorporated >=1 bactericide. The bactericide is present as sodium chloride pastilles in which it is enveloped in a manner such that it has no contact with the exterior. The sterilising agent comprising a pure bactericide, or one premixed with NaCl, contained in the NaCl pastilles is novel. The NaCl soln. is used for regenerating the ion exchange resin. The use of chlorine contg. bactericides, such as chloramine T, results in hydrolysis with moist air contg. reducing the efficiency and also polluting the atmosphere. By using the pastilles this problem is avoided. |
