PURPOSE:To provide a display medium which has a high density and high resolution and is inexpensive, by forming a monomolecular film (layered film) of an inclusion complex composed of a specified host molecule and a guest molecule included by the host molecule on a carrier to obtain a luminescent display layer. CONSTITUTION:A host molecule contg. hydrophilic, hydrophobic and inclusion moiety (e.g. a compd. of formula I or II) and a guest molecule (e.g. a compd. of formula III or IV) capable of forming a complex with the host molecule are dissolved in a solvent and the soln. is developed on a water phase to precipitate an inclusion complex composed of the host molecule and the guest molecule included by the host molecule in the form of a film. The filmy inclusion complex is transferred onto a carrier to form a monomolecular film. If desired, this operation is repeated to form a layered film, thus obtaining a luminescent display layer. A display medium obtd. therefrom can display by utilizing the chemical or physical change of the monomolecular film or the layered film of the inclusion complex.
