The invention relates to a mechanical device, which makes it possible to increase the length of the lever arms formed by the cranks of a pedal box. This extension takes place in an automatic fashion during the active phase of pedalling. In contrast, this same device has the effect of reducing the length of the lever during the inactive phase of pedalling (raising the pedal back up). According to the invention, the extension of the cranks has no influence on the amplitude of the movement, which remains circular, or on its regularity. This invention relates to all machines moved by man's muscle power (arms or legs). It can be directly applied to bicycles, to bikes for pedalling in the vertical or horizontal position, to tandems, to vehicles for the disabled, to pedal cars, pedalos, microlight flying machines and to all machines or mechanisms equipped with pedal boxes, where it is desired to maximise the value of the pedalling torque, without increasing the amplitude of the movement, and in consequence, to improve the efficiency of pedalling. <IMAGE>
