Descender (abseil device) comprising a figure-of-eight-shaped metal body composed of two rings 12, 14 joined together by a common spacer 16. According to the invention, one of the rings 12 is closed whereas the other ring 14 is arranged as a semi-open notch delimited by two lateral branches 20, 22 which are separated from each other by a gap 24 permitting the entry of the rope 18 into the open ring 14. A locking member, particularly a crab (karabiner) 30, is capable of closing off the said gap 24 so as to trap the rope 18. Application: mountaineering and speleology. <IMAGE>
