PURPOSE:To monitor quickly an optional recorded or reproduced picture while keeping the recording and reproducing state by providing a temporary storage device possible for recording/reproducing one or plural field video signals in synchronization with the recording and reproduction of a rotary head as for a helical scan type magnetic recording and reproducing device. CONSTITUTION:A recording/reproduction head 7 is moved at a prescribed speed in the radial direction of a magnetic disc 6 by a control signal C1 from a head position control section 8 to record/reproduce the magnetic disc 6. Moreover, an auxiliary recording/reproducing section 10 which supplies a video signal to the recording/reproduction head 7 or to which the video signal reproduced at the recording/reproduction head 7 is applied is provided, and the auxiliary recording/ reproducing section 10, the magnetic disc 6 and the recording/reproducing head 7 form the temporary device. A signal B1 designating a reproduction speed through the designation of the moving speed of the recording/reproduction head 7 is applied from an input terminal 23 at the reproduction of the temporary storage device and a signal B2 specifying the recording mode period of the temporary storage device is applied from an input terminal 24.
