The present invention relates to a safety and drain plug, in particular for the casing of a gear mechanism running in an oil bath, the said plug comprising a plug body with one or more passages running in the longitudinal direction which intersect an outer annular groove in order to connect the interior of the casing to atmosphere in one direction only. A seal is mounted on the plug body and this seal has a flexible lip which normally rests on the outer annular groove and seals this off hermetically but comes away from this outer annular groove in order to release gas or vapours when the pressure in the casing is greater than a predetermined value, even if this is only small.
