PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate raw material for preparing a phenylethanolamine derivative of cardiac drug economically in high yield, by sulfonating a 4-alkylacetophenone in sulfuric acid, chlorinating the reaction product, reacting the resultant compound with ammonia. CONSTITUTION:A 4-alkylacetophenone is sulfonated in conc. sulfuric acid or sulfuric anhydride or fuming sulfuric acid at low temperature <=20 deg.C to give a 5-acetyl-2-alkylbenzenesulfonic acid or sulfonate. The reaction product is then reacted with an N,N-dialkylaniline or its protonic acid salt, to give an N,N-dialkylaniline salt of 5-acetyl-2-alkylbenzenesulfonic acid, this salt is reacted with thionyl chloride to give a 5-acetyl-2-alkylbenzenesulfonyl chloride. Then, it is reacted with ammonia, to give the aimed substance.
