PURPOSE:To obtain a low-cost magnet without excessively reducing the magnetic performance of the titled 2-17 type magnet contg. Sm by substituting misch metal for part of Sm in the 2-17 type magnet and adding B and/or Si. CONSTITUTION:This rare earth element-Co magnet is made of an alloy composed essentially of R2Co17 type crystals (R is a composite body consisting of Sm and MM). The alloy has a composition represented by the formula (where MM is misch metal consisting of light rare earth elements including La, Ce, Pr and Nd, TM is Co-base transition metals, A is B and/or Si, 0<x<=0.4, 0<y<=0.1, and z is the atomic ratio of TM to rare earth elements). The desired magnet is obtd. by substituting MM for part of Sm, adding B and/or Si, and devising heat treatment.
