PURPOSE:To use the same identifying circuit even when movement is different in direction or speed by using two linear image sensors, detecting which sensor reveals a character segment earlier, and detecting the direction and speed of a scan. CONSTITUTION:The hand scanner 30 having the two image sensors 4 and 5 composed of photoelectric converting elements arrayed in lines is moved on a form 1 to detect black meaning a character segment by detecting circuits 10 and 11 through binary-coding circuits 8 and 9. Further, the 1st detection of black is detected through inverters 19 and 20 and AND gates 17 and 18 when black flags 12 and 13 are both 0 and outputs of detecting circuits 10 and 11 are 1, and respective black flags are set to 1 to determine the moving direction. Then, scanning clocks are counted by counters 14 and 15 until black is detected by another image sensor to calculate the moving speed. Character data is normalized with the moving speed and stored in a memory and addresses are assigned corresponding to the moving direction, so that a read is made by the same identifying circuit.
