The method involves (a) the isolation mixt. in the preserve of an oxidising agent (b) the methylation of phenazine with dimethyl sulphate, (c) the photochemical oxidn. of the resulting 9-methylphenazinium methyl sulphate and (d) the isolation of the final prod.. - The phenazine is isolated from the reaction mixt. by ext. using an organic solvent in the presence of activated carbon and an oxidising agent, lead oxide PbO2. The methylation is carried out at 0-10 deg. C. The photochemical oxidn. is carried out using ultraviolet light for 3 hours, then the pH is adjusted to 8.5-9.5 and the photochemical oxidn. is continued for another 3-5 hours. |
