PURPOSE:To adjust the interval between a couple of optical fibers with high precision by arranging one-terminal sides of the optical fibers at an interval less than a desired value and other-terminal sides on the same plane at an angle of <=4 deg., and polishing the one-terminal sides lengthwise and adjusting the interval to the desired value. CONSTITUTION:The two optical fibers 1 and 2 are fixed while sandwiched between two flat plates 3 and 4 so that one-terminal sides are aligned and the other-terminal sides are arranged on the same plane at a spread angle of <=4 deg.. Then, the one-terminal sides of the couple of optical fibers 1 and 2 are polished to widen the interval P0 between the optical fibers 1 and 2 according to an increase in the quantity of the polishing. For the purpose, the quantity of polishing of the fiber end surfaces is adjusted to adjust the interval P0 between the optical fibers 1 and 2 with high precision regardless of the core diameters of the fibers. |
