Tools which are used for machining non-metallic materials, in particular stone, are subject not only to wear on their active machining edges and faces which is caused by the actual machining process of the stone, but also to wear on the passive tool flanks and sides which are not in contact with the stone, but only with cooling lubricants. This wear of passive subjected to the flow of tool flanks which is based on the effects of erosion, cavitation and corrosion and which substantially reduces the service life of costly machining tools is to be eliminated. It is therefore proposed to form the wear-resistant layer, which at least partly surrounds the basic body of such a tool, from a soft material, with the result that the disadvantageous effect of the processes causing the material removal or wear is eliminated by way of energy absorption or particle reflection. <IMAGE>
