PURPOSE:To select reading of high resolution and low resolution economically by arranging the reading side end parts of light emitting side fibers straight at fixed array pitches and adjacently arranging the photodetecting side end parts of the photodetecting side fibers in parallel with the array of the light emitting side fiber end parts at pitches shifted by a half of the pitch of the array of the reading side end parts of the light emitting side fibers. CONSTITUTION:The reading side end parts 15 of thirteen light emitting side fibers T1-T13 are straight arranged at the fixed array pitches and twelve photodetecting side fibers R1-R12 are shifted almost by a half of the pitch at the reading side end part 17 so as to be parallel with the array of the reading side end parts 15 of the light emitting side fibers, so that 24 reading points on the original surface can be read out with high resolution. Since the ON/OFF of the light emitting elements L1-L13 is controlled with time division, a reading head 1 can read out high resolution and low resolution. The low resolution reading attains rapid reading as compared with high resolution reading.
