PURPOSE:To manufacture 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone in a high yield by electrolytically oxidizing 2-methylnaphthalene with a graphite electrode supporting a metallic oxide as a catalyst in the specified solvent contg. a supporting electrolyte. CONSTITUTION:The supporting electrolyte such as NaClO4 is added to an org. solvent contg. water to about 0.05-0.2mol/l concn. The solvent is charged into an electrolytic cell provided with a diaphragm, and 2-methylnaphthalene is added to the anode chamber. At least one among acetone, acetonitrile, dimethylformamide, tetrahydrofuran and ethanol is used as the org. solvent, and the water content of the solvent is adjusted to about 20-40vol%. The graphite electrode supporting a metallic oxide such as Ti or V oxide by about 0.5-5wt% (expressed in terms of metal) is placed in the anode chamber, and the 2-methylnaphthalene is electrolytically oxidized to obtain 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone in a high yield.
