Novel β-carboline-3-carboxylic esters of the general formula I: <IMAGE> where R<4> denotes methyl, ethyl or methoxymethyl, R<5> denotes hydrogen, -OR<8> (where R<8> denotes C1-4- alkyl, C3-7-cycloalkyl, C4-7-alkylcycloalkyl, propynyl or cyclohexenyl) or -CH2-OR<9>, where R<9> denotes C1-4-alkyl, R<6> denotes hydrogen, -OR<10> (where R<10> denotes branched C1-4-alkyl or C3-6-cycloalkyl) or -CH2-OR<9>, where R<9> has the previously mentioned meaning, provided that R<5> and R<6> are not both hydrogen, that R<5> is not isopropoxy when R<4> denotes H, and that R<5> is not isopropoxy or ethoxymethyl when R<4> denotes methyl. The novel compounds, which exhibit surprising psychotropic properties, are prepared by means of analogy processes.
