PURPOSE:To make it possible to sustain the purifying rate for a long time as a whole, by forming notches in a catalyst carrier in a zig-zag pattern in the direction crossing the stream of exhaust gas. CONSTITUTION:A catalyst carrier 2 has a honeycomb structure, and is disposed in a purifying device body 1 with the passages 2a thereof being laid in the direction of stream of exhaust gas. Notches 2b, 2c, 2d, 2e are formed in the middle section of the catalyst carrier 2 in a zig-zag pattern from the upper and lower side of the catalyst carrier 2, and therefore, a turbulent flow section is created in the middle section. The notches 2b, 2c, 2d, 2e in a zig-zag pattern arranged from the upper or lower side may be extended not only at a right angle to the axis of the catalyst carrier but also at an angle other than a right angle, and further, the width and intervals of the notches 2b, 2c, 2d, 2e may be made variable. |
