The invention relates to a method for producing an aerosol stream, especially an aerosol stream containing SiO2 particles, which is suitable for producing preforms for optical glass fibres (optical waveguides). Within the aerosol stream, according to the invention, an ultrasonic field is generated, which prevents deposition of the SiO2 particles at unwanted locations of the reaction vessel and which enables preferred deposition on the preform to be produced.
