A packing machine for mass-produced articles, especially bottles, has a supply position to which the articles are conveyed, brought to a standstill, raised by a gripper head and fed to a container. In order to ascertain whether articles have erroneously remained in the supply position, according to the invention a scanning device is provided which has a photocell and a light source and passes over the entire supply position once the articles have been raised and before the arrival of new articles, and triggers an alarm if the light beam is interrupted by a remaining article.
