PURPOSE:To improve the dust collection efficiency by setting the voltage impressed on an auxiliary electrode so that the electrolytic intensity in the vicinity of a dust collecting electrode may be enhanced. CONSTITUTION:A dust-contg. gas is passed between a discharge electrode 12 and a dust collecting electrode 13, and the particulate substance in said dust-contg. gas is electrostatically separated and removed. A DC voltage of the same kind is impressed on a main discharge electrode 14 and an auxiliary discharge electrode 15, and the voltage V2 impressed on the auxiliary discharge electrode 15 may be set to satisfy the voltage equation involving the distance R between the main discharge electrode 14 and the dust collecting electrode 13, the distance (r) between the main discharge electrode 14 and the auxiliary discharge electrode 15, and the voltage impressed on the main discharge electrode 14. Consequently, since the voltage impressed on the auxiliary electrode 15 is set so that the electrolytic intensity may be enhanced in the vicinity of the dust collecting electrode 12, the drift speed of the particle from the discharge electrode 12 toward the dust collecting electrode 13 is increased, and the dust collection efficiency is improved.
