PURPOSE:To rapidly set a printing ribbon into a printable condition, by a construction wherein two printing ribbon for exclusive use in forward printing and backward printing, respectively, are provided, one of the ribbons is shifted to a printing position at the time of forward printing, and the other is shifted to the printing position at the time of backward printing. CONSTITUTION:With a carrier 6 moved for forward printing, a gear 76 is rotated clockwise, and when a gear 79 is rotated, a gear 80 connected thereto through a clutch is rotated, whereby a ribbon-feeding shaft 65 is rotated, and a used part of a printing ribbon 37a in an upper ribbon cassette 37 is taken up, while a printing ribbon 38a in a ribbon cassette 38 is not taken up, since the connection between the two systems in cut by a clutch 87. When the carrier 6 is moved for backward printing, the gears are rotated in direction opposite to those in the case of the forward printing, whereby a ribbon-feeding shaft 66 is rotated, and a used part of the ribbon 38a in the lower ribbon cassette 38 is taken up, while the ribbon 37a in the ribbon cassette 37 is not taken up, since the connection with the gear 79 is cut by the clutch. |
