PURPOSE:To always keep just tracking state by rocking the position of an erasing rotary head to a recording track pattern, and detecting the tracking position of the erasing rotary head where the output level of a recording/reproducing rotary head is maximized. CONSTITUTION:When the erasing rotary head FE is rocked by controlling the switching time of a reproduced output from the erasing rotary head FE for a reference pilot signal in a switch circuit 62, a reproduced output of heads HA, HB is supplied from an amplifier 48 to an envelope detecting circuit 63 and its high frequency output level is detected. The output of the circuit 63 is converted into a digital signal by an A/D converter 64 and the digital signal is supplied to a control circuit 60 to detect a maximum point of time. When the maximum value is detected, the contents of a memory 601 is fixed on the preceding state and therefore selecting signals SE1, SE2 from a switch control circuit 602 are also fixed on the preceding state. Namely, the maximization of a reproduced high frequency output level shows the just tracking state of the heads HA, HB.
