PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high purity, with a series of continuous steps, without using a particular purification process, from 4-mercaptophenol obtained by reducing 4-hydroxybenzenesulfonyl chloride. CONSTITUTION:A water-insoluble organic solvent solution containing 4-mercaptophenol is produced e.g. by adding a water-insoluble organic solvent (e.g. benzene, toluene, etc.) to the reduction product of 4-hydroxybenzenesulfonyl chloride, and transferring 4-mercaptophenol to the solvent. The solution is made to contact with an alkaline aqueous solution (e.g. NaOH solution) to extract the 4- mercaptophenol from the organic solvent solution to the alkaline aqueous solution. The objective compound can be prepared by reacting the 4-mercaptophenol contained in the aqueous solution with bis(2-haloethoxy)methane for 1-2hr under heating at 60-80 deg.C.
