The present invention relates to derivatives of a-halobutyraldehyde which contain a terminal carboxylate group and which are dimethylated in the 3-position. These compounds can be converted in a simple manner to give l, l-dichlorohexenoic acid derivatives which, in turn, are known starting materials for the preparation of insecticides. The novel a-halobutyraldehydes are prepared by reacting w-valerolactones with alcohols. These valerolactones, in turn, are known compounds whose preparation is described, for example, EP-OS 31,932.
