PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording/reproducing device which decreases the tracking errors and stabilizing it action by having forcible coincidence between a pilot signal and the pilot signal of a magnetic tape in a reproduction mode. CONSTITUTION:Areas a1-a4 where no pilot signal is recorded are secured at different positions of tracks A1-A4 on a magnetic tape 1. A detection circuit 15 transmits detection signals e1-e4 showing areas a1-a4. A pilot signal deciding circuit 16 compares these detection signals with the phase of a head switching pulse and discriminates the frequency of the pilot signal of a reproduction track. A pilot signal producing circuit 7 produces a pilot signal equal to that used in a record mode and sends it to a selection circuit 17. A mixer circuit 6 mixes both pilot signals given from an LPF circuit 5 and the circuit 17 and transmits a beat signal. This beat signal has matching of phase every field and undergoes rectification to be delivered through a comparator 14 as a tracking signal.
