PURPOSE:To simplify and accelerate the recognition of the displacement quantity of a known object pattern image by adjoining plural picture elements in a line, arranging them on a photographing surface in a curve and reading out each output signal at a level corresponding to the incident light intensity of each picture element in time series. CONSTITUTION:Respective picture elements from a picture element P1 at the leading end to that Pn at the tailing end are adjacent in a line and arranged one-dimensionally so as to be in a curve. Some part of a straight line pattern image 21 is projected on some of picture elements out of respective picture elements P1-PN. A shift gate 22 is provided in the inside of an inner circular arrangement of picture elements adjacent to the picture elements P1-PN as a signal output means for reading out sequentially signals corresponding to the incident light intensity of respective picture elements P1-PN in time series. A charge transfer register 23 is provided adjacently to the inside of said gate 22, and furthermore an output gate, a floating diffusion area, a reset gate, a drain area, etc., are provided on the end of the register 23. On its inside an output circuit 24 is provided which detects a flowing and built-up charge in the floating diffusion area from the register 23 and convertsl a voltage signal.
