PURPOSE:To form easily and surely a metallic coating for protecting an optical fiber by inserting an otptical fiber immediately after drawing into a metallic pipe, and melting the metallic pipe. CONSTITUTION:The base material 1 for an optical fiber is melted by a heater 2 and drawn in specified outer diameter. Subsequently, a buffer layer is optionally formed by coating a resin, etc. on the outer circumference of the optical fiber. Silicon resin, epoxy resin, urethane resin, etc. can be preferably used as the material for the buffer layer. The optical fiber 6 is then inserted into a metallic pipe 3. The metallic pipe 3 is heated by a heater 4, melted, and welded to the outer circumference of the optical fiber 6 to form a metallic coat. The coated fiber is then wound up by a winding machine 5. Al, Bi, and In or the alloy thereof are used as the material for the metallic coat in consideration of the m.p., influence on vitreous parts, durability, etc.
