<p>2-Cyano 3,5-dimethyl 4-methoxy pyridine is made by (a) reacting 3,5-dimethyl 4-nitro pyridine N-oxide with dimethyl sulphate under anhydrous conditions; (b) reacting the 3,5-dimethyl 4-nitro N-methoxy pyridine methyl sulphate obtd. with alkali cyanide at low temp. under nitrogen to form 2-cyano 3,5-dimethyl 4-nitro pyridine; and (c) reacting this with sodium methoxide at low temp. in methanol to obtn. the desired prod.</p> |
