The spray nozzles (6) of a humidifying and cooling installation are supplied with compressed air and water for the purpose of raising the relative air humidity and/or for adiabatic cooling in closed spaces. In order to prevent the partial or complete blockage of the fine nozzle mouths after the spraying operation, the compressed air supply (7) to the nozzle (6) is on the one hand maintained for a time after each interruption of the water supply (1); on the other hand, the water system is pressure-relieved (14) after the interruption of the water supply, the compressed air supply being interrupted before the pressure-relief of the water system is stopped; in this case, the water supply available in the nozzle region is reduced at least by a volume which corresponds to the increase in volume of the water supply exposed to the ambient temperature caused by thermal expansion. Application to the humidification and/or cooling of laboratories, printing shops, fruit-ripening rooms, greenhouses etc. <IMAGE>
