The carton (41) is intended for combination with a bottle crate whose compartments are formed solely by spacer elements projecting vertically upwards from the base of the crate, and having a cruciate cross-section. By virtue of the fact that the bottle crate has no continuous compartment walls, the cross-section legs of the spacer elements extend parallel to the side walls of the crate, and the carton has incisions (60, 62) directed inwards perpendicularly from the outside on all sides, cartons of different sizes can be introduced into the associated bottle crate in different directions and in different arrangements. Cartons which enclose more than two rows of bottles (43) have, in addition to the lateral incisions (60, 62), bottom incisions (55) for receiving a spacer element. The incisions (60) provided in the side walls (63, 64) of the carton are guided upwards beyond the cylindrical area of the bottles so that a side wall (63, 64) of the carton coming into contact with the profiled edge area of a bottle crate can be deflected inwards in the area of the incision (60). <IMAGE>
