PURPOSE:To trace a segment easily by writing algorithm for deciding an intersected point or a contact point between coupled components and the Nos. of plural coupled components intersected or contacted each other on the basis of the decided result in a coupled component detecting means. CONSTITUTION:Picture data are read from a picture memory 1 to a register 4 and then inputted to a coupled area detecting part 5. The picture data are moved in a small area and then written in a buffer register 6 to be used as picture data at the scanning of the succeeding line. The reading of the picture data from the picture memory 1 is repeated until the picture data corresponding to the small area are stored in the register 4. After completing the reading of the picture data, the picture data are sent from the coupled area detecting part 5 to a coupled component extracting part 7 to check the coupled status. On the basis of the extracted result of the coupled components, the coupled component Nos. are supplied and written to/in a table together with the coupled information.
