PURPOSE:The titled diluent suitable for making an acrylic resin coating compound, polyester resin coating compound, etc. into a high solid content, providing a film having improved appearance, etc., obtained by polymerizing a reaction product of a hydroxyl group-containing polymerizable acrylic acid monomer and a lactone compound. CONSTITUTION:First of all, a hydroxyl group-containing polymerizable (meth) acrylic acid monomer (e.g., 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, etc.) is reacted with a lactone compound (preferably epsilon-caprolactone and its derivative) at 25-130 deg.C for 7-12hr. Then, the prepared hydroxyl group-containing polymerizable monomer is polymerized in 2-10 average polymerization degree, to give the desired diluent shown by the formula (R<1> and R<2> are H, or methyl; l is 2-10; m is 2, or 4-7; R1-R2m are H, or 1-8C alkyl; n is 1-7).
