<p>PURPOSE:To read and decode a bar code in an optional direction, namely, the forward direction or the reverse direction by retrieving a bar arrangement coinciding with the read bar code from a character reference table to decode the bar code to characters. CONSTITUTION:When bar code data is written and stored in a data storage part 34, the first decoding part 40 is operated. A bar arrangement coinciding with that of the bar code is retrieved from a forward-direction character reference table stored in the first memory part 36. If the bar arrangement is retrieved in the forward-direction character reference table, a forward/reverse decision part 44 is operated to output characters corresponding to the bar code to a display part 26. If characters cannot be decoded, it is decided that the bar code is read in the reverse direction. In this case, the second decoding part 42 is operated. The second decoding part 42 retrieves said bar arrangement from a reverse- direction character reference table stored in the second memory part 38.</p> |
