The invention relates to a novel triphenylamine polymer which can be a homopolymer comprising 4,4',4''-triphenylamine units, a copolymer comprising 4,4',4''-triphenylamine units and 1,4-benzene units or a homopolymer comprising 4,4'-(4''-unsubstituted or 4''-alkyl- or -alkoxy)triphenylamine. This polymer is prepared by first carrying out a Grignard reaction between a halotriphenylamine and metallic magnesium, and then polymerising the resultant Grignard reagent in an inert organic solvent using a nickel compound as catalyst. This polymer takes on high conductivity when doped with an electron acceptor which is stable in the atmosphere. This polymer is suitable as an electrode material in devices containing a liquid electrolyte and is advantageous in that it is stable to repeated electrochemical oxidation and reduction.
